Correcting swirls and scratches from your car's paint is one of the most difficult and time-consuming aspects of detailing. That difficulty and time is only increased when you can't see the scratches and swirls you are trying to correct! Even if swirls and scratches aren't visible to the naked eye, it is still very important to correct them. Swirl and scratches, of any size, depth, and visibility, create an uneven surface. When the paint surface is uneven, light doesn't reflect uniformly across the entire surface. When detailers say "gloss", what they mean is "the light reflects uniformly across the entire surface." So, even though you can't see the scratches without assistance, you will still see their effect on the gloss!
Swirl finder lights are essentially extremely strong flashlights. They illuminate the surface much more than even the sun can in most cases! This increased illumination allows you to see the difference in the way the light is reflecting much more clearly, making even the hardest to see scratches and swirls very apparent! More than that though, you will be able to use a swirl finder light to repeatedly check and see the progress of your polishing efforts, so you don't buff away more precious clear coat than you have to!
Paint thickness gauges are another great tool for making sure you don't buff away too much of your clear coat! These amazing tools can be used to measure how thick the layers between the surface and the base metal of the panel are. This will allow you to see how much more of the surface can be abraded away before you start to risk burning through the paint!
